Sunderland sea front toilets should re-open

Liberal Democrats in Sunderland are calling on the council to re-open public toilets as public urination and human excrement becomes problem at the city's sea front.

Lib Dem campaigner for Fulwell and Seaburn Malcolm Bond is calling on the City Council to re-open toilet facilities along the Sunderland sea front after an influx of visitors in recent days has led to public urination and even reports of human excrement being found in the area.

Commenting, local resident and Liberal Democrat campaigner for Fulwell and Seaburn Malcolm Bond said:

"Whether we like it or not, government guidance allows people to travel and lots of people have started coming to Roker and Seaburn to enjoy our beaches and sea front, especially when the weather has been so good.

"But with businesses remaining closed, the fact that public toilets are locked is causing huge problems. Sunderland City Council must take action to re-open our toilets or else I fear we are just going to get more people urinating and defecating in streets and parts of our promenade."The fact that toilets for people with disabilities, operated by radar keys, are being kept locked by the Council also beggars belief.

"I recognise opening toilets provides a challenge, but unlocking them would stop the current problems and would at least give people somewhere to wash their hands which is vital to stop the spread of the virus. Other councils like South Tyneside have taken this approach and Sunderland should follow."
