Bus company Go North East is drastically cutting its services from 1st June, slashing services as people start to come out of lockdown.

The decision was going to mean residents on Tunstall Bank Estate in Ryhope would have been left with no services during the day Monday to Saturday, as the 38 bus will now only go as far as Hollycarrside.

The 38C service will operate through Ravensworth and Runcorn on Tunstall Bank Estate, but only on evenings and Sundays with one bus per hour.

Whilst other services will serve Tunstall Bank - the main route through Ryhope - local Lib Dem councillor for area Heather Fagan reacted with fury as it would have meant the estate would hardly be served at all.

However, Heather welcomed a u-turn by Go North East, who will now run the 938 bus through the estate during the day Monday - Saturday.

Commenting, local Lib Dem councillor Heather Fagan said:

"It is great news that Go North East have listened to local people after they tried to leave the whole of Tunstall Bank estate without any bus service during the day.

"Making people walk up and down the hilly streets of the estate to get the bus from the main road would have meant lots of older people and those with mobility issues couldn't have got out and about during the day."

"I am glad that Go North East have listened to residents and have changed their mind."
