Plea for help to keep residents safe after more cars burnt out on Thorney Close
Local councillors are urging Northumbria Police's Crime Commissioner to come up with a plan to tackle repeated arson attacks in Thorney Close after a spate of vehicles being torched.
Liberal Democrat councillors for Thorney Close Stephen O'Brien and Margaret Crosby are asking a local police chief for more resources to keep residents on an arson-hit estate in Sunderland safe.
A car was set alight last night (16th December) on Tilbury Road in Thorney Close. Residents have also reported attacks on cars on Torrens Road yesterday evening.
These latest torchings follow a van being set alight and rolled down the Sandhills and another car being burnt out on Tuscan Road - both in the past few weeks.
The arson attacks have led to local councillors asking for a crackdown and extra police resources to keep the community safe.
Commenting, local Lib Dem councillor Stephen O'Brien said:
"Local people are understandably angry about the continuing spate of arson attacks on cars and vans in Thorney Close. People don't feel like the things they work hard for are safe on local streets, and are concerned that those responsible aren't being stopped from torching more cars.
"I know that local police and fire services are under huge pressure, but something must be done to stop these arson attacks continuing before more people's cars are burnt out in the run up to Christmas.
"That's why local Lib Dem councillors will be calling on the local Police Commissioner to come up with an action plan and to see if there are more resources that can be put into keeping Thorney Close's streets safe and making sure we catch those responsible for these despicable attacks."
