People on Thorney Close urged to have their say on plans for new nursery
Lib Dem councillors are urging people in Thorney Close to give their backing to plans for a new nursery offer for 2 year old children at a local primary school.
Sunderland City Council are asking local people what they think about creating a new nursery offer for 2 year old children in Thorney Close.
The Council's proposal would see an early years education provision for 2 years olds created at Thorney Close Primary School on Torquay Road.
The school currently has a nursery for 3-5 year olds, but Sunderland Council has launched a consultation to lower the age of admission at Thorney Close Primary School to allow the school to admit 2 year old children.
If the plan gets approval from the community and the Council the new provision for 2 year olds could open as soon as January 2023.
People on the estate and the surrounding areas are being urged to respond to the Council's 2-minute consultation on whether the Council should go ahead and provide a 2 year old nursery offer at Thorney Close Primary.
The consultation is available online at www.sunderland.gov.uk/article/17835/Development-of-nursery-provision-for-2-year-old-children-at-Thorney-Close-Primary-School/ and is open for responses until Friday 9th September.
Commenting, local Liberal Democrat councillor for Thorney Close Stephen O'Brien said:
"This is a welcome proposal from Sunderland Council which would make life easier for local families so they can make use of the government's free childcare hours for 2 year olds in the same location as any older siblings who are already at Thorney Close Primary School.
"It would also mean people can send their kids to one place from the age of 2 right the way through to Year 6 without having to change settings.
"I'm urging everyone in Thorney Close, Springwell and the surrounding areas to reply to the consultation and support the plan for this new nursery provision for 2 year olds in our community."
