New play park for Seaburn due in 2024 after Council bosses approve funding
Plans for a brand new play area at Seaburn have taken another step forward after Sunderland City Council’s cabinet today (11th July) approved a funding agreement between the Council and its development arm Siglion to deliver a brand new play park.
The plans will see a new play park worth £1.495million built on green space next to Prego restaurant on Lowry Road, opposite the existing pirate’s play park area.
The plans will now go out for bids from construction companies and an application for planning permission submitted. If planning permission is granted, the work would begin in Autumn 2023 and the new play park open by Spring 2024. The approval of the funding agreement was warmly welcomed by local councillors for the area.
Speaking after today’s meeting local Lib Dem councillor for Fulwell and Seaburn Peter Walton said: “This is fantastic news for Seaburn. A new play park development is exactly what the area has been crying out for to help add to the family-friendly offer for locals and visitors alike.
“Local people fondly remember the pirate’s play park in its heyday. Together with the neighbouring Lambton Worm park there were fantastic play areas for families to take their kids too. The existing play park is looking tired and needs replacing so it is great to see these new plans finally making progress.
“I look forward to the brand new play park opening in spring 2024 and am calling on the Council to make sure that as well as putting in place measures to keep young people safe from busy roads nearby, the new park has a range of accessible and inclusive play equipment so that children with disabilities or special needs can have an equal right to play and can benefit from this new development.”
