May 2022 Local Elections: Another positive showing for the Liberal Democrats in Sunderland

Niall Hodson and Malcolm Bond

It was a good set of local elections for the Liberal Democrats in Wearside on 5th May. The local Lib Dems gained seats from both Labour and the Conservatives, and our council group now stands at a record 14 councillors.

We gained a third seat in Doxford - congratulations to our newly-elected councillor there, Allen Curtis - and we held our seats in Millfield, Pallion and Sandhill. We missed out in Hendon and Redhill, where our excellent candidates Tom Livingstone and Steve Donkin came in second place.

The big news of the night was in Fulwell, where our candidate Malcolm Bond trounced the incumbent Conservatives, and won the ward with a stonking majority:

Liberal Democrat Malcolm Bond - 2,193
Conservative Party - 1,254
Labour Party - 648
Green Party - 93
