Local Lib Dem councillors put in a bid for Council funding to put up Christmas lights atplaces like Thorndale shops to help boost trade for businesses and give younger kids somewhere local they could go to look at the lights.

But Sunderland Council bosses refused to give the plans the go-ahead.

Local Lib Dem councillor Stephen O'Brien said: "Some Christmas lights would have been a nice thing for local families and to spread cheer in the winter months without people having to take their kids into town or over to the seafront to see the lights.

"Sadly, my plans to spread some Christmas cheer were blocked by scrooges at Sunderland Council. As usual, Thorney Close is second best for Sunderland Labour. We deserve better!"
