Commenting on proposals by Sunderland City Council to build a new crematorium on green space between Doxford Park, Farringdon and Gilley Law, Liberal Democrat councillor for Doxford Heather Fagan said:

"Local people are shocked at these proposals for a new crematorium facility and feel that the Council hasn't been open and honest about their plans.

"There are understandable concerns about the increase in traffic on local roads and any impact that any emissions from a new crematorium could have.

"With thousands of new homes being built on green fields in the Doxford area, and green spaces next to the proposed crematorium site earmarked for a new school and car park, there are genuine concerns about the cumulative loss of open space for local people to use.

"Sunderland Council's bosses must come clean with residents, outline their proposals in full so people can understand any risks and hold a genuine consultation with local communities instead of forcing an unwanted development on us."
