Lib Dem campaigner for Fulwell & Seaburn Malcolm Bond has hit out at the Conservatives for blocking a new law that would mean water companies have to stop raw sewage being discharged into rivers and seas.

The recent attempts to change environmental legislation in Parliament were blocked by Conservatives and mean Northumbrian Water can continue to get away with discharging raw sewage onto our beaches.

Local Lib Dem campaigner Malcolm Bond said: "Local people won't believe the crocodile tears of Conservative councillors for our area who claim to be in favour of cleaning up our beaches. In reality, local Conservatives have sat on their hands and let their own Government block a new law that would have made water companies clean up beaches like Seaburn and Whitburn. Their hypocrisy is absolutely mind blowing!"

"I have been working with local campaign groups, have brought Lib Dem MP Munira Wilson to Sunderland to get her support for our campaign, and have even taken the fight to the House of Lords where questions about the situation in Sunderland have been asked to the government by Lib Dem Lords and Baronesses. I will keep up the fight to get the Tories to act and rid our seafront of sewage once and for all", added Malcolm.
